The current All Progressives Congress (APC) ruling Party’s administration is very close to 365 days in office.
When Noble Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka was requested by Media Reporters some three months ago to access President Bola Tinubu's performances he said it was too early! The question is how long does it take for a government to hit the ground and run with articulate ideas if those in the saddle were actually ready and prepared for the job?
While picking his cabinet and other political appointees, the man surrounded himself with Yesterday Paddies whom he boasted were "tried and tested" just as his predecessor Baba Buhari worked with his kinsmen in spite of massive criticism and public outcry against nepotism, partialism, tribalism, favoritism etc.!
During the campaign period, they were leached to him to answer all hard/tricky media questions at Chattam House London and also locally by the Nigerian Press during political debates in his desperation to clinch the Aso Rock Ticket!
THE PRESIDENT AND HIS YESTERDAY APPOINTEES CAN NO LONGER PROFFER SOLUTIONS TO SECURITY AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC ISSUES DUE TO ANALOGUE IDEAS!
1. They told him to remove petrol subsidy on 29th May 2023 day of inauguration and he did.
2. He was told to merge the exchange rate - official and parallel market.
3. He was told to float the naira.
4. He was told to support PMS Importers with the scarce borrowed forex funds to augment differences in landing costs due to volatile international exchange rates and NOW FORCIBLY PAYING THE "REMOVED" SUBSIDY AGAIN!
5. But he was advised to tell the Riyadh 2024 Special World Economic Forum on Global Collaboration Growth and Energy for Development on Sunday 28th April 2024, that Nigeria would have gone bankrupt if the subsidy was not removed then!
6. On the same Sunday in Saudi Arabia during a meeting with Microsoft Founder and Philanthropist, Mr. Bill Gates, on the sidelines he said technology was a potent weapon against corruption and financial impropriety in public service but added that resistance was expected at any innovation to strengthen systems and forestall malfeasance.
“Technology is the enemy of fraud, corruption, and irregularity. We have been working hard on improving technology. “There is always the initial resistance. Corruption, self-interest, and fraudulent activity will always be an enemy, but when you bend that curve, you will receive the benefit. The nation will receive the benefit”.
TINUBU'S BETTER YESTERDAY IN LAGOS STATE - 1999-2007 HAS BECOME A BROKEN RECORD!
He claimed to have deployed technology to enhance the revenue base of Lagos State as Governor, through collection and utilization of essential data, for an efficient tax system for the state.
“When I was governor of Lagos State, I faced challenges. I started with N600 million and ended up with over N8 billion. And right now, they are targeting a trillion naira with the use of technology in the state. There is no other shortcut. We must invest in technology. We must focus, be diligent, and work hard”.
Bill Gates informed the President of a one-identity technological platform that could integrate variegated data, and expatiated on the centrality of data harmonization to planning, security, and tax efficiency.
“We are working with Mr. Wale Edun, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, on digitization. Before you came into office, there were a few things attempted in identity management. But they have been very scattered. There have been multiple identification systems.
“Now, there is a plan to take that technology called MOSIP and use it for this identification platform so that people can get digital benefits. We are providing support for that, and we can provide more support.
“With MOSIP ID, there is potential application in all government payment programmes. It helps with payment efficiency and bank accounts, and eventually, when everyone is using that, it makes tax collection easier. That benefit will take a few years. However, there will be more bank accounts, more financial inclusion, and effective government payment programmes,” Mr. Bill Gates said. He also said that Nigeria has the capacity to manage this system and related-technological systems as the nation brims with talented youths.
“The last time I went to the Microsoft office in Lagos, I saw the amazing work that they were doing and how they were growing their operations. So, you have a lot of Nigerian talents to manage these systems,” he said. The businessman also spoke about some high-yield seeds and a variety of crops with the potential for improved productivity and nutrition in all regions of the country.
He disclosed that countries like the United States and Brazil had been using these seeds which had been tested and certified as safe.
“There is no safety issue with these seeds. Supporting the Minister of Agriculture’s effort in this regard is something that we feel is important and worth supporting,” Mr. Gates added.
Responding to Gates’ submission, President Tinubu said: “We will look at this and work on it further. I am proud of Nigeria’s youths. They are very excited and creative with technology. They encourage us as we continue to press our reform efforts forward for their future prosperity. This is Nigeria’s time to become what it ought to be.”
THE WAY OUT FOR MR. TINUBU AND HIS YESTERDAY PADDIES IS TO OPT FOR ONE HOUSE PARLIAMENTARY SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT THROUGH POPULAR REFERENDUM!
In 24 days from Sunday 5th May 2024, Mr Tinubu would have spent 100 days in office. Are these the kinds of story-telling that suffering Nigerians will continue to hear from a group of people who have no iota of how ICT governance was motivated for 21st Century Nations?
