NDDC FORENSIC PROBE IS A WILD GOOSE CHASE!

It is now very obvious that the handlers of President Muhammadu Buhari, have completely failed to brief him in respect of the solidarity among the people of Niger Delta oil rich region who obsessively believe that all revenue accruing to Nigeria through Crude Oil belonged to them and should not be diverted for the development of other regions in spite of the constitutional provisions in the Exclusive Legislative List, which empowers the Federal Government to disburse the said funds equitably to all regions - otherwise he would not have embarked on a wild goose chase of forensic audit of Niger Delta Development Commission (NNDC) accounts!

From all indications, information available to Mr. President was that Niger Delta was a volatile region filled with dare-devil militants who were opposed to the government at the centre and could even bring down any administration if adequate measures were not taken!

The terror of detonated bombs at noon at the Eagle Square, Abuja during the commemoration of Nigeria’s 50th Independence Anniversary when  Charles Okah and his terrorists group attempted to kill scores of innocent Nigerians and in the process, assassinate the then President Ebele Jonathan, a Balyesan indigene,  must still be fresh in the memory of President Buhari who at that time, still passionately waited in the wings to rule Nigeria as a democrat!  

It is on record that President Buhari has avoided Niger Delta Geo-Political Zone like a plague (except for one visit to Port-Harcourt), in his five years in the saddle; but thank God for his able assistant Vice President ‘Yemi Osinbajo, who traversed the entire length and breadth of the region during their first term, to solicit for their unalloyed support for the incumbent’s administration.

PAST ACTS OF SOLIDARITY/CAMARADERIE TO COVER UP INSTITUTIONAL CORRUPTION IN NIGER DELTA!

Niger Delta indigenes never faulted their leaders who diverted and embezzled large sums of monies meant for socio-economic infrastructures from 1999 to date even when sufficient evidences through law-enforcement weighed heavily against them!

Nigerians have not forgotten the case late Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of Balyesa State, who was convicted of massive looting of State’s funds which he transferred overseas nor the case of ex-governor of Delta State, James Ibori who was involved in similar acts – both caught, sentenced and jailed home and abroad – yet they were hailed like HEROES by their native brethren who bore the brunt of deficit socio-economic infrastructures!

It is common knowledge that the Niger Delta region, apart from natural disadvantage of topography - being so close to the Atlantic Ocean and also possessing large deposits of CRUDE OIL, is being explored/exploited by both local and international Oil Companies. As a result of damaging degradation of the soils reserved for agriculture and waters that should naturally produce aquaculture foods – and though the masses of people had become poverty-stricken and reduced to sub-humans, yet saw nothing wrong in the robbery of their common patrimony by their so-called leaders!   

PRESIDENT BUHARI ORDERS FORENSIC AUDITING OF MASSIVE LOOTING IN NDDC!

Is it not certain now that the so-called probe would not see the light of the day when SOLIDARITY RALLIES by coalition of  youth and women groups have become a daily event at the NDDC Headquarters in Port-Harcourt where the indigenous organisers claim the following assertions:

No N 40billion naira is missing from the NDDC accounts.
National Assembly should allow the Interim Management Committee set up by the Federal Government to focus on the developing Nigerians in the oil-rich region.
NDDC distributes medical and relief materials to to the people.
NDDC creates job opportunities through Rice mill to boost agriculture and provides post-graduate foreign scholarship to indigenes.
NDDC encourages communities to assist in project monitoring.

BUT THEY FAILED TO MENTION THAT THE OGONI OIL SPILLAGE DEGRADATION SUBSISTED IN SPITE OF MONIES PUMPED INTO THE PROJECT!

There is no doubt that nothing good would come out of the probe when Rivers Governor Nyesome Wike, stopped law-enforcement agents from inviting NDDC’s former acting Managing Director, Dr, Joi Nunieh for questioning but provided a safe haven for her in the Government Lodge!

It was alleged that N16 trillion naira worth of investment was pumped into NDDC between years 2000-2020 – with nothing to show for it.
The Federal Agency was established by ex-President Aremu Obasanjo with the sole mandate of developing the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

“ABUJA IS A LIE,” SAYS ROTIMI AMAECHI Before he became the presidential campaign co-ordinator to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2014, Chief Rotimi Amaechi served as two-term PDP Governor of the Rivers State in South-South Nigeria (1999-2007), and like current occupier of that State, Nyesome Wike, he was very antagonistic to the Federal Government and vehemently accused it of robbing “Peter to pay Paul”!

At every opportunity, Amaechi would proclaim to everyone who cared to listen that ‘Abuja Is A Lie’ because crude oil proceeds from Niger Delta was diverted to build the Federal Capital Territory while indigenes of the riverine region lived in abject poverty, advocated for more funds according to derivation and vigorously insisted that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), established in the year 2000, to be adequately funded to carry out its onerous mandate!

But now, seven years as All Progressives Congress chieftain and five years as Minister of Transport, he has respected the nation’s 1999 Constitution which appointed and authorised the Federal Government according to the Exclusive Legislative List to solely and equitably disburse all extractive/mineral proceeds accruing to the nation for the benefits of all States!

THE CESSPOOL OF CORRUPTION CALLED NNDC!

Nigerians cannot also easily forget the introduction of bombs and explosives into the nation’s volatile arena by Niger Delta militants, through crude oil pipeline blow ups and kidnappings of expatriate oil workers in the twilight of military dictatorship!

The defiant group called Movement for the Emancipation of The Niger Delta (MEND), led by Asari Dokubo, left no one in doubt about their mission to rescue the geographical zone from unhealthy exploitation of the land through exploration of crude oil with little compensation to show for it!

Then came the democratic administration of former military dictator, retired General Aremu Obasanjo, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and who in the year 2,000 commissioned the Niger Delta Development Corporation (NDDC), to cater for the socio-economic needs of that richest region of Nigeria, which contributed not less than 85% of the annual budget expenditure!

LET IT BE ON RECORD THAT CRUDE OIL HAS BEEN DISCOVERED IN BAUCHI STATE, NORTHERN NIGERIA!

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), announced in October the discovery of hydrocarbon (oil and gas), deposits in Kolmani River II Well on the Upper onthe Upper Benue Trough, Gongola Basin, in the North Eastern part of the country.
NNPC and a Chinese Company, Bureau for Geophysical Corporation, have begun mobilisation to Alkake. Darazo, Misau in Bauchi State to commence the drilling of oil wells, an exploration that would create employment and economic opportunities to indigenes of the State.

Presently activities on the exploration had slowed down due to cash crunch precipitated through the world-wide Covid-19 pandemic which has already triggered global inflation to which Nigeria is not excepted!

NOW THAT WE HAVE CRUDE OIL ON BOTH SIDES OF THE DIVIDE, IT IS HOPED THAT NIGER DELTA CITIZENS WOULD BE LESS AGGRESSIVE TO OTHER NIGERIANS NOW THAT THE MINERAL DEPOSIT IS A COMMON COMMODITY!

Professor Itse Sagay, Chairman Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC), strongly believes that if corruption was totally eliminated by Governments of the South-South Niger Delta region, NDDC could turn the area into ANOTHER ABUJA! “Thou shalt know the truth and the truth shall set you free!
