149 MILLION BARRELS MISSING CRUDE OIL: INSTITUTIONAL IMPUNITY MUST DIE WITH THE OLD GENERAL!

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), is determined to resist any attempt by the outgoing old Soldier Muhammadu Buhari to sweep under the carpet the allegations in respect of 149 million barrels of crude oil allegedly missing or face legal action.

An audited and documented 2019 Report by the Auditor-General of the Federation and the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), is yet to receive official attention for investigation and prosecution in respect of the missing crude oil in spite of the humongous figure! Already the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice was already dismissing the allegation by claiming that no crude oil was missing. And whereas, according to that 2019 Audited Report, over 107 million barrels of crude oil were lifted as domestic crude without any document or tracing.

NEITI also reported missing 42.25 million barrels of crude oil in the same year. NEITI is urging retired General Buhari to realise that public interest in ensuring justice and accountability for this very serious allegations must be religiously followed especially before he bolts to Daura, Katsina on the 29th May 2023!

QUOTES FROM SERAP'S CORRESPONDENCE WITH BUHARI.

" SERAP notes that you have repeatedly promised to combat CORRUPTION. As you go into the final weeks of your term of office the missing crude oil allegations present yet another opportunity to demonstrate your commitment and to uphold your oath of office both as President and Minister of Petroleum Resources.
"As the President and substantive Minister of Petroleum resources, you and your government should prioritise getting to the bottom of these allegations and use the remainder of your time of reference of office to ensure justice and accountability for the serious crimes against the Nigerian people.

"Investigating the allegations and naming and shaming and prosecuting those suspected to be responsible for the missing crude oil will serve the public interest and end the IMPUNITY OF PERPETRATORS.

"We will be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within 7 days of the receipt and or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions to compel you and your government to comply with our request in the public interest
"The allegations by both the Auditor-General and NEITI are different from the a whistleblower claims that 48 million barrels of Bonny Light crude oil allegedly sold in China in 2015 are missing or unaccounted for.
“The reports by the Auditor-General and NEITI suggest a grave violation of the Nigerian constitution 1999 (as amended) and the country's anti-corruption laws and international obligations as well as public trust.
"These damning revelations also suggest your government is failing to prevent and combat the plundering of Nigeria's wealth and natural resources; name and bring suspected perpetrators to account and recover any proceeds of crime."

A House of Representatives Ad-Hoc
Committee is reported to be probing the allegations.

CONCLUDING WITH BISHOP MATTHEW  KUKAH'S QUOTES:

1) Anyone who wants to govern Nigeria must be prepared to cope with our anger.
2) The only freedom people confer on you is the freedom to agree with them.
3) Some Nigerians think being in office means being in power. Power is about influence.
4) Power and leadership is getting people to do what they don't want to do, but doing it happily.
5) You can be in office and not be in power. You can be in power and not be in office.
6) Every unhappy family is unhappy differently but they all have one thing in common, they are unhappy.
7) IF YOU ARE GENUINELY READY TO SERVE WHY MUST IT BE AT ALL COST? THESE PROBLEMS COME FROM OUR GREED.
8) Anything can go wrong where we are now. We are at tipping point.
9)  For the first time every Nigerian is very angry although the reason may be very different.
10) If we fought the CIVIL WAR 40 years ago and the reasons why we fought still persist, then there is a problem.

At different fora, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Reverend Matthew Hassan Kukah always appealed to Nigerians to make up their minds to develop good attitudes to promote good governance and peaceful co-existence.
Bishop Kukah who spoke on the Topic: "THE WEAKNESS OF POWER" believed that although the country faced challenges, positive change of attitude, peace, unity and good governance would improve Nigeria.

He noted that many Nigerians were not satisfied with the situation of things in the country but cautioned that anger, hatred and violence would not tackle the challenges.
He said Nigerians have reasons to be angry but they should remember that a lot of people have sacrificed their lives for the country.
He appealed to Nigerians to love one another irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political leanings, adding       "Our love for Nigeria should not die. We will redeem this country. This is our country let us pray for our nation."
Bishop Kukah is notable for SPEAKING THE TRUTH FOR WHICH WE ON THIS PLATFORM HAVE BEEN HAVE BEEN CHIEF ADVOCATES IN THE PAST 10 YEARS.

Any dividends to the Citizens? Would those who aspire for leadership positions
exhibit the right attitudes of that will inspire the citizens to work together with them in unity? We need upright leaders whose patriotism will excel inordinate ambition and will be ready to serve, not to be served and also not to explore whatever weaknesses they have discovered in our Constitution and all the various laws and regulations"

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

This article will be incomplete without the following EVERGREEN QUOTE from Emeritus Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah on “THE PARADOX OF THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY," in the month of May, 2016
as follows:
"Nigerian educational systems have surprising outcomes. The smartest students pass with First Class and get admitted to Medical and Engineering schools. The Second Class students get MBAs and LLBs to manage the First Class students. The Third Class students enter politics and rule both the First and Second Class students. The Failures enter the Underworld of crime and control the politicians and businesses. And best of all, those who did not attend school become Prophets and Imams and everyone follows them. What a paradox of life. This can only happen in Nigeria where corruption is other of the day."

Always remember that God can never be deceived, "whatsoever a man soweth that he shall reap!"
