“NIGERIA HOUSE OF COMMONS” (NHC) - ARE THE CORRUPT POLITICIANS INTERESTED?
During the First Republic shortly after Nigeria’s independence on 1st October 1960, a Regional Parliamentary System of Government evolved before the unpopular military intervention by some young soldiers!
This First Republic featured a Federal, Westminster-style Parliamentary System with a strong regional autonomy. Each of the three large regions (Northern, Western, and Eastern) had its own Parliament with a House of Assembly and a House of Chiefs, and was headed by a premier as the head of government, supported by a council of ministers.
The Federal Government had a bi-cameral parliament consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives, and a Prime Minister as the head of government, while the President was the ceremonial Head of State from 1963.
Those military youths who took over government by brutal force in 1966 and remained in power for almost 30 years into adulthood by 1999, handed over a very costly PRESIDENTIAL SYSTEM which opened Nigeria’s floodgate of institutional corruption – as the worst globally!
And whereas all military interventions in those horrifying years blamed one another of same detestable acts in office!
CAMPAIGN FOR PARLIAMENTARY SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT TO STAMP OUT CORRUPTION!
In the past 14 years, the Zion B-BC Newsletter championed the cause for politicians to discard the very costly PRESIDENTIAL SYSTEM and embrace the COST- LESS PARLIAMENTARY option!
In several publications, WE encouraged Civilian Nigerian Youths to get involved and lead the way through a united front and compel the politicians to embrace the system that will not only destroyed corruption but also exterminate crimes and criminalities, terrorism, brigandage kidnapping and banditry from the polity!
We advocated peaceful approach that would encourage Youths of like minds to embrace the Campaign.
WE are very proud to highlight in this Edition, a young female; ebullient, industrious, diligent, resourceful, bilingual and a resilient Nigerian Youth, who is the brain behind “Nigeria House of Commons”, a TV Replica of the UK Grassroots System of Government that Works!
GLORY UKWENGA is a very concerned Citizen, doggedly determined not just to correct the sweeping negative appellation of late President Muhammadu Buhari that “Nigerian Youths Were Lazy Drones”, but prove the reverse that there are very industrious and resourceful under the right leadership and political climate!
The “concept behind Nigeria House of Commons” is a youth-led reality television show that simulates the Nigerian House of Representatives to increase youth participation in governance. It provides a platform for young Nigerians to debate and discuss real national issues, gain a practical understanding of the legislative process, and learn about different political ideologies through role-playing in fictional political parties. The show is intended to make governance more accessible and relatable, and to inspire young people to become more engaged in nation-building.
It is a platform for youth engagement that brings young Nigerians from across the country to debate critical national issues, such as fuel subsidy removal, social media regulation, and state policing.
Through simulation of legislative processes, the show provides a hands-on, practical way for young people to learn about lawmaking, policy, and political ideology and includes participants representing various states, the FCT, and people with disabilities, ensuring diverse voices are heard in the conversation.
So far, in the past 13 Editions of the program featured on YouTube, participants were usually split into two fictional political parties and engaged in simulated parliamentary activities like debating motions, caucusing, and voting.
WE are very convinced that this initiative is not just a reality show but a tool for civic education, youth advocacy, re-imagining and re-defining a much-profitable political system to suit the NEEDS of the 21st Century Nigeria mass population!
MS. GLORY UKWENGA ADVOCATES YOUTH INCLUSION TO INJECT SANITY INTO NIGERIA’S POLITICAL SYSTEM! (Below is the very inspiring speech she delivered to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary as published by THISDAY.)
“NIGERIA HOUSE OF COMMONS CHAMPIONS YOUTH INCLUSION.”
As Nigeria prepares to mark its 65th Independence Day, the Executive Director of Africana League, the civic engagement organization behind Nigeria’s first political reality TV show, ‘Nigeria House of Commons,’ Glory Ukwenga, has called for greater youth participation in politics and governance, stressing that the country’s future depends on empowering the next generation.
As a platform designed to demystify legislative processes and inspire a new wave of political leadership, Ukwenga underscored the urgency of creating real avenues for young people to engage meaningfully in governance.
Currently airing on YouTube, ‘Nigeria House of Commons’ is in its first season with 13 episodes. It follows a mock parliament where young Nigerians, representing their states across two mock party lines, debate national policies and critical issues that affect citizens’ daily lives. Topics debated so far include the removal of fuel subsidies, state policing as a response to insecurity, food price regulation, and reforms to the NYSC policy, healthcare, and migration.
Citing the limited progress made since the passage of the “Not Too Young To Run Act”, Ukwenga noted that systemic barriers continue to prevent young Nigerians from playing active roles in politics.
“For too long, young Nigerians have been spectators in their own country’s story. The ‘Nigeria House of Commons’ creates a space where they can move from the sidelines to the centre stage. Here, they debate motions, test ideas, and prove that leadership is not about age or privilege, but about vision and character. Our goal is simple: to ignite the passion of millions of young Nigerians for nation-building and to show that the future of our democracy rests in their hands,” she said.
The show is inclusive of young women and men, as well as Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), ensuring that voices often excluded from the national conversation are represented.
Also lending her voice at the event was Hon. Mary Victor-Magaji, a contestant on the show representing Kebbi State and a person living with visual impairment. She highlighted the importance of inclusivity and drew attention to the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.
In conclusion, Ms.Ukwenga posited that: “Persons with disabilities should be seen first as people, not as cases for charity adding that true nation-building means bringing us to the table, recognizing our skills, and making room for our contributions.
“ Disability is not inability, and a more inclusive Nigeria is possible only when no group is left behind,” she stated.
“As Nigeria reflects on 65 years of independence, the Nigeria House of Commons is positioning itself as a civic innovation tool to reimagine leadership, one where ideas, vision, and character take centre stage, and where young Nigerians are empowered to drive the future of the nation.”
ONE MORE BRIDGE TO CROSS!
It is very imperative to encourage Ms. Ukwenga to Join forces with other patriotic Bodies and Organizations which have direct consultations with the Incumbent All Progressives Congress (APC), Administration on the issue of Unicameral Parliamentary System of Government as the most suitable for Nigeria.
Most important among them is the COMPATRIOTS Chaired by Eminent Statesman and Politician, former Commonwealth Secretary General, Chief EMEKA ANYANOKU, who met with President BOLA TINUBU, in August 2024 and requested him to introduce the PARLIAMENTARY SYSTEM THROUGH REFERENDUM WITHIN 10 MONTHS!
Other requests in the past 15 months for the actualization of the Parliamentary System by Us and other advocates were ignored while Alhaji TINUBU kept strategizing for a second Presidential opportunity in 2027!
On OUR part, your noble cause which is in tandem with ours (14 years on), will be prioritized at every opportunity until the Poor Masses are delivered from the bondage of CORRUPTION AND SLAVERY IN OUR COUNTRY FLOWING WITH MILK AND HONEY!
All Nigerian Youths MUST transform from: #SIT-IZEN TO ACT-IZEN!
[EXPECT A PRIME MINISTER IN NIGERIA NOW!]
